More Foam Does Not Mean Cleaner Hair — A Chemist Explains Why

"If my shampoo doesn't foam a lot, it's not working."

It's one of the most deeply held beliefs in hair care. More lather, more clean. A thick, billowing foam feels satisfying, thorough, effective. And the beauty industry has spent decades reinforcing exactly that expectation.

Where the Foam Actually Comes From

Traditional shampoos produce their signature big lather through a class of ingredients called sulfate surfactants — most commonly Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These are highly efficient cleansing agents. They bind to oil and dirt and rinse them away quickly, and they generate a lot of foam in the process.

The foam, however, is a byproduct of the surfactant chemistry — not a measure of its cleansing effectiveness. A surfactant can remove dirt, sebum, and product buildup just as thoroughly with minimal lather. The bubbles are what you see. They are not what is doing the cleaning.


What Sulfates Are Also Stripping Away

Here's the part that matters. Sulfate surfactants are not selective. While they're removing dirt and excess oil, they're also stripping away something your scalp and hair shaft genuinely need: your natural lipid barrier.

Your scalp, like the skin on your face, maintains a protective layer of lipids — oils and fatty acids that regulate moisture, protect against irritation, and keep the scalp microbiome in balance. Sulfates dissolve this layer just as readily as they dissolve the sebum and debris you actually want removed.

The result, as Vivi puts it, is hair that is frizzy, tangled, and structurally compromised — and a scalp that is left dry, reactive, and working overtime to replenish what was stripped. Sound familiar? It's the same rebound sebum cycle that hot water triggers on facial skin, playing out on your scalp.


Why Foam and Clean Are Not the Same Thing

This is the core misunderstanding the shampoo industry has relied on for a long time. Consumers associate foam with efficacy — so formulas are engineered to produce more of it, regardless of whether more foam makes for a better clean.

It doesn't. What determines how well a shampoo cleanses is the surfactant chemistry — specifically, whether the surfactants are effective at lifting oil and debris from the hair shaft and scalp without unnecessarily disrupting the lipid barrier in the process.

Less foam can mean gentler, more intelligent chemistry. Not a weaker product.


A Better Approach: Plant-Based Surfactants

The alternative to sulfates isn't a compromise in cleansing — it's a different category of surfactant chemistry altogether.
